Q: What is the origin of the Biewer Yorkie?
A: The Biewer “beaver” or “bee-vair” a la Pom Pon is a variation of the Yorkshire Terrier. The breed originated in Germany when Werner and Gertrude Biewer’s blue and tan champions "Darling of Friedheck" and "Frufru of Friedheck” produced a puppy with a piebald coat (large white and black patches). The Biewers continued breeding their Yorkshires to obtain puppies with white limbs, abdomens, and in the tip of the tales. The Biewer Yorkshire was recognized by the ACH in 1989 and gained popularity in the USA in 2003. At this time, the Biewer Terrier Club of America is the only American club that recognizes this breed.

Q: Are Biewers a good family dog?
A: Temperament of the Biewer Terrier is intelligent, loyal and
very devoted to their human family. They have a fun loving,
child like attitude that makes them a great companion for all
ages.

Q: I have never heard of Biewers before, where did they come from?
A: The original Biewer was a mutation or sport in a litter of Yorkshire terriers bred in Germany by Werner and Gertrude Biewer in 1982, producing one puppy with a large amount of white. The Biewers bred the first blue, white, and golden Biewer Yorkshire, "Schneeflocken von Friedheck", in 1984. Mr. Biewer first showed the dogs as black-and-white Yorkshire terriers in 1988.
Excessive amounts of white disqualified the dogs from being bred under the rules of the VDH (the German Kennel Club.) The dogs were then registered with another registry, not as Yorkshire terriers but as Biewer Yorkshire a la Pom Pon.[1]

Q: What is the “normal” height and weight for Biewer dogs?
A: The Biewer Yorkie is eight to nine inches tall and weighs in the four to seven pound range. The Biewer breed has a small, flat head, level bite, short muzzle with a black nose. Eyes are intelligent and ears should be V shape and stand up. The back should be level and tail carried high.

Q: Are there any Health issues associated with Biewers?
A: Biewer Yorkies are prone to eye irritations and luxating patellar (dislocation of the knee cap). These puppies should have their hair cut short on top of their head or if left long, pulled up and banded. Jumping from couches or beds to hard floors can lead to knee injuries. Biewer Yorkies are also prone to bronchitis (respiratory infection); repeated infections could lead to tracheal collapse (windpipe). Smoking and dust are just two respiratory irritants that could cause problems for your pets. Biewers are inclined to early tooth decay, poor tolerance of anesthetics, and delicate digestion. It is best to feed Biewers with dry food to help keep their teeth clean and strong and to prevent digestive upset. Avoid feeding Biewers table foods and snacks. Puppies should be checked by the Vet at 6 months and have their teeth cleaned (if necessary) to avert dental infections and decay that could warrant removal of the teeth or the teeth falling out on their own.
